English as the Official Language of the United States NADSFL Position Paper

WHEREAS: The National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Languages believes that English is already the official language of the United States and has been for over 200 years, and that all Americans recognize the importance of English to national life, and

WHEREAS: The National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Language believes that exclusive use of English in the United States is contrary to the spirit of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights of the United States and therefore needs no additional legislation, and

WHEREAS: The National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Languages believes that the twenty-first century will require a citizenry that is bilingual, biliterate, and multicultural:

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED THAT

The National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Languages reaffirms its advocacy for the learning, teaching and maintaining of more than one language for ALL children in the United States and its belief that diversity and multilingualism strengthens the quality of life for ALL Americans.
